Great Building Close to everything.
The full service building has a spectacular arrival area with a fountain and grand circular driveway with guest parking. The marble lobby has several sitting areas for relaxation and entertainment with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the park. The desk is attended 24-hours with a 7am-11pm door staff and a full-time engineer. There is a party room, fitness center, library and two of the most beautiful swimming pools in DC!
Van Ness North is a 466 unit cooperative apartment house in upper Northwest Washington, D.C. The structure is 16 stories tall, built into a hillside overlooking a tributary of Rock Creek Park. About half of the apartments have two or three bedrooms, and most of the remainder are one bedroom units. To the north is Soapstone Valley Park, to the east is the Van Ness East (a condominium), the grounds of the Embassy of the Netherlands, and Rock Creek Park. The Van Ness South (a rental property) is across Veazey Terrace. A medical building and office/retail structure are between the Van Ness North and Connecticut Avenue.
A circular driveway off Veazey Terrace offers short-term parking for visitors. The driveway encircles a spectacular fountain, surrounded from early Spring to late Fall by a floral display. Floor to ceiling plate glass at the back of the lobby offers a 5th floor view of the Park. Because the building is built into the hillside, the lobby entrance is actually on the 5th floor. Parking extends for several floors beneath the lobby.
Services include a doorman, a front desk staffed 24 hours a day, an engineer who lives on the premises, and a dry cleaning and valet service in the building. Amenities include a party room, card room, exercise room, and a sauna. A hot water/chilled water system provides heat and air conditioning, powered by natural gas with heating oil as a backup system. The building has recently completed an energy-saving project which included energy efficient lighting, and a window replacement project which will reduce heating and air conditioning costs.
James Goode, author of Washington's Best Addresses, devotes a chapter to Van Ness Center. Following are quotes from Goode's book, hosted here with the permission of the author.
Variety and Appeal
Designed in the International Style, the brick apartment houses (of Van Ness) are basically identical in facade treatment but markedly different in the size and mix of units within. The percentage of two-bedroom apartments, for instance, is much higher in the Van Ness North than in the Van Ness South. Most of the units throughout the complex include balconies, some with open rails and others screened with panels. Many on the ground level have private patios enclosed by brick walls for privacy. All of the buildings are well sited and connected by large plazas, terraces, driveways, and walkways. Landscaping includes an assortment of fountains and open lawns. Of the 18 acres, 13 are open space. ...
All three buildings have the same high-quality construction, but the apartments vary in design from building to building. Although efficiency apartments do not have balconies, balconies are included on most one-bedroom and all two- and three-bedroom units. All corner apartment kitchens have outside windows ... Each of the three apartment houses has a laundry room on every floor as well as other amenities like a sauna and a party room. In Van Ness North, residents operate a common lending library in a fourth-floor room. ...
The site of Van Ness Center is ideal for many, although others would claim it is "too far out." The view to the east is parkland - Soapstone Valley Park, a 24-acre spur of Rock Creek Park. Once an Indian quarry, Soapstone Valley Park now comprises steep wooded banks of a tributary of Rock Creek.
The fifteen-hundred-unit Van Ness Center complex offers two outdoor swimming pools - a small one adjacent to Soapstone Valley Park and a much larger 5,400 square foot pool in the center of the complex. Both are shared by the residents of all three buildings. ...
In addition, the complex features several underground garages - Van Ness East for 200 cars, Van Ness North for 500 cars, and Van Ness South for 450 cars, and parking for 750 cars under the office building. ... The Van Ness buildings provide more underground parking than any other apartment complex in Washington proper.
Features: 1 block from Metro's Red Line (Van Ness-UDC Station), 1 block from shopping, restaurants, etc., On quiet side street, Underground Parking, Exercise Room, Sauna, Two outdoor swimming pools, Party Room, Circulating Library, Front Desk staffed 24 hours a day, Doorman, Package room for your UPS, FedEx, etc deliveries, Hardwood Floors, Central Air, Balconies or Decks on most apartments.
