- 7 Nov 2008This has to be one of the most religious-right-wing conservative areas of the country you'll ever find. One notices right away the white fences that line all the main roads. These fences are very xe2x80x9cwhitexe2x80x9d and so are the people they are xe2x80x9cprotecting.xe2x80x9d There are almost as many white people as there are white fences. The traffic management is laughable. It is bad enough that Powell Road (Olentangy Street) and Rt. 315 is a major bottleneck that from all indications will not be fixed any time soon. But right in the center of town is a representation of true idiocy. Liberty Road and Olentangy Street have no left turn lanes and no left turn arrows on the traffic light. It appears this will never be changed, as the city xe2x80x9cfathersxe2x80x9d have just installed new sidewalks and curbing but no lanes for folks needing to turn left. This seems to say, we donxe2x80x99t want you going through here even though this is the only way to get across town.. Speaking of the center of town, it is mostly a collection of houses that have been converted for business use, mainly antiques. While there is significant historical relevancy to some of the actual downtown buildings, the rest of it seems to be some kind of fantasy land that is anything but historic. There are probably more SUVs in Powell than any place. The drivers of these obnoxious vehicles are not friendly, drive very fast, and will just as soon run you off the road as look at you, especially if you appear to not be from around there. The majority of these seem to be driven by golf-hat-wearing-females holding a metal coffee mug in one hand and the cell-phone in the other hand. None of them appear to have jobs or a sex life. Overall, there is a sort of neurotic, uncomfortable, paranoid, almost xe2x80x9cscaryxe2x80x9d vibe in town. The people are friendly enough, but they know when youxe2x80x99re not from around there. Many act like theyxe2x80x99re holding some secret so deep and dark that if it leaked out, Powell would make a long and shameful appearance in the national headlines. The message in Powell is quite clear: xe2x80x9cStay away. We donxe2x80x99t want you and we donxe2x80x99t need youxe2x80xa6unless of course you look, think, and act just like us.xe2x80x9d
