Our home is located within The Downs Historic District (Historic District 11) which has been a mainstay neighborhood of Tuscaloosa for nearly a century. The sense of community has always been our favorite part of the neighborhood. This sense of community is made evident in the families walking the closed loop neighboorhood, children playing in the neighborhood park, neighbors chatting on the neighboorhood facebook page, the HISTORIC annual neighborhood Christmas party, and summertime drive-way happy hours just to name a few. The neighborhood is located in a closed loop with only one entrance and exit which, in combination with the communication of the neighborhood facebook page, makes the neighboorhood feel very safe and secure. The location of our home is second to none. The home is located about a mile from the University of Alabama campus, about 2 miles from downtown Tuscaloosa, about two miles from interstate access. We would not choose another location in the city as it is perfect for professionals, professors, students, newly weds, game days, and investors. Not to mention, the fenced-in backyard is perfect for dog lovers. Both the front and backyard have always been two of our favorite spaces. We'll always remember cozying up on the front porch to read a book and unwind while neighbors pass by on evening walks and the large gatherings and grill-outs we've had on the back deck while watching the game on the TV concealed in one of the side walls. As a historic district, the character of the neighborhood is protected by the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). The Downs is one of the few neighborhoods in Tuscaloosa with each house being unique with its own individual character. In addition to the HPC, the neighborhood's volunteer Home Owner's Association is incredibly active when it comes to looking after the best interests of the neighborhood.
